Resumen
ABSTRACT
This project arose as an immediate response to the need to improve the irrigation process for Tahiti lime crops in the municipality of Girón, Santander. Water is a vital resource for plants, as irrigation provides the necessary amount for their growth, conservation, and development. Plants are composed of 90% water, which is continuously transported through them to maintain their vital processes (González & Pérez, 2022). It is essential to provide an adequate amount of water to crops; for this purpose, various controlled and automated irrigation systems can be employed to supply the required amount at the right time, thus avoiding water resource waste (Martínez, 2021).
To address this, a prototype of an automated irrigation system was designed using a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This system evaluates soil moisture variables and implements a level control system in the storage tank, which is fed by rainwater. Additionally, programmable logic and sensors were incorporated to measure the necessary data, aiming to improve the system's autonomy (López et al., 2020).
The main objective is to implement an automated irrigation method for Tahiti lime crops to address the water scarcity affecting the municipality of Girón, Santander. This system seeks not only to strengthen local agriculture but also to improve water use efficiency, thereby promoting a positive economic impact in the region (Rojas, 2019).
